Good Question. Another one, for that matter, might be, 'Where's Disk First Aid 8.5.2?
Apple, in its infinite wisdom, has deemed it a good marketing strategy to deprive people of the latest and greatest utilities, items we think are more then reasonable to provide for free, instead only providing them with the purchase of a new OS CD.
Version Compatibility Chart
| Mac OS Version | Use Minimum Disk First Aid Version* | ||
| OS 7.x - OS 8.1 | Disk First Aid 8.2 | ||
| OS 8.5 - OS 8.6 | Disk First Aid 8.5.2 | ||
| OS 9.0 - OS 9.x | Disk First Aid 8.5.5 |
* We strongly suggest you use v8.5.5 if you can get hold of it.
The Great Inane Utility Holdout
This holdout on Apple's part is especially problematic for OS 8.5 users, since the included Disk First Aid v8.5.1 is defective, and Disk First Aid v 8.5.2 is required even for that OS, but, the only place to get that version is on an OS 8.6 CD, or in the free OS 8.6 Updater (34.6MB). Why's that a big deal? Well, if you don't want to upgrade to 8.6, for a list of good reasons for some people, you have to figure out how to get that version out without updating your current OS.
Shortcuts to Where You Need to Be
If you have the OS 9 CD, you have nothing to worry about, as it includes Disk First Aid 8.5.5 in the Utilities Folder already. If you are running anything less, you'll need to settle for Disk First Aid 8.5.2, by either taking it from a full installation version of the OS 8.6 System CD, or by downloading the free OS 8.6 Updater, and using TomeViewer to extract the Disk First Aid 8.5.2 application file.
Caution!
If you do opt to upgrade to OS 8.6, be sure you also install the needed patches to prevent damage from the Font Manager Bug.
