Is Alsoft's new DiskShield™ technology included in DiskWarrior™ v2.0 really as good as they claim?

Doh!

Alas, Alsoft failed to predict the overwhelming response of consumer desire for DiskWarrior 2.0 (discussed in part one of this article), and though I ordered mere hours after they announced its release at Macworld on January 7, Alsoft sales tells me my copy of DiskWarrior 2.0 and DiskShield may not reach me until the second week of February.

As a result, I have obviously not been able to review this feature.

Unbridled Speculation

If I have to guess, based on the sparse documentation and bold claims at the Alsoft website. . .

. . .I'd tell you that it is probably going to be some sort of read/write-verify routine, which isn't anything really new at all. In fact, you can use any good disk driver utility to set read/write verification for greater data integrity and assurance, but, at a sometimes-serious hit to your overall disk I/O performance.

That said, Al Whipple is a True MacGuru and innovator of new approaches to old problems, so I wouldn't be surprised at all if he found a way to reduce any performance hits while preventing bad data from being written.

When I get my copy, I'll tear into it and let you know.
